I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of thinking small. Tired of waiting for someone else to solve the problems that surround us. Tired of putting up with limiting circumstances rather than pushing back against them.

Most of all, I’m tired of being told one person can’t change the world.

So I’m calling bullshit. It’s time to think and dream bigger.

And I want you to join me. I need you to join me.

You in?

So here’s the deal.

I know this awesome, disruptive, inspiring group of human beings collectively known as charity: waterwho have this crazy idea that together we can bring clean water to everyone on the planet within our lifetimes.

That’s over 600 million people around the world who are currently drinking the equivalent of swamp water in many cases.

But you know what? I don’t think they’re crazy, or maybe they are, and the rest of us just need to be a little crazier. Either way, I think that you and I, individuals and communities, friends accross the internet and IRL can actually come together to make a significant difference and literally transform a community in a permanent and meaningful way.

So for my birthday this year (September 19th!) I’m asking that you get a little crazy with me and believe that even as individuals in a seemingly increasingly fractured and stratified world, we hold more power than we realize and that it’s our duty to use that power to make that world a little more whole.

For my birthday this year, I’m asking you to help me think a little bigger, prove the doubters wrong, and transform the lives of hundreds of people by giving them water.

$10K In 30 Days

Water is one of our most basic human needs, and yet hundreds of millions of people around the world live without access to clean drinking water. Every year, contaminated drinking water kills more people than all forms of violence combined.

But the problem is solvable, and once a community gains access to clean water, it transforms instantly.

Kids are able to attend school, women able to work and produce income for their families. According to the UN, every $1 invested in water projects nets $8-$12 in return to the community.

Water changes everything. And so by giving water, we can help change everything.

With charity: water every dollar goes directly to fund water projects, and you can actually see where your money is being used, the impact it’s having, and the people involved.

Transforming a community, and proving you can change the world isn’t easy, but there are 3 really simple ways you can help.

You can, of course, choose any amount to donate that works for you, but here are some metrics that make it easier to judge the impact you can have.

$30 is enough to give one person access to a lifetime supply of clean water, that’s a pretty good deal, hey?

$300 is enough to give 10 people a lifetime supply of water. That’s 1 or 2 entire families whose lives will be forever changed!

I believe that people want to give to causes that inspire them and that they know are making a difference in the world, but they’re even more likely to do so if they know that they’re small donation will be matched by a backing source, thereby doubling their impact.

If you’re interested in pledging, I might suggest starting at around $1000.

Or if you’d like to go even bigger, $3000 is enough to give the gift of water to 100 people, that’s 200 people if your pledge gets matched!

I totally understand that not everyone can give to every cause out there. If this sounds like you you can still help me achieve my goal by sharing this campaign with someone (or many someones!) who might be able to either donate, pledge or connect me with others who can help!

To be honest, this might be the most important way you can help, as so much of the success hinges on getting the word out!

I forgot to mention, there’s something else that’s in this for you.

I kind of don’t want to tell you about it because it scares me what you’re going to do with the information I’m about to give you… Ok fine, I’ll spit it out.

I’ve recently been crowdsourcing a list of challenges designed to make me uncomfortable, face down fear, rejection, physical and mental limitations and more.

Things like not eating sugar for a month, spending a night sleeping on the street, going to a busy intersection and dancing, or one of my personal favourites, taking a walk around the neighborhood with nothing but a tobacco pipe, glass of whiskey, underwear, and tube socks…

I’ve actually already started a 30-day cold shower challenge, right as summer seems to have ended and the temperature dropped 🙁

But here’s the thing.

There are just too many challenges on the list. And so I’m going to let you, the contributors decide on which challenges get added to the official list.

I’ll document my progress of course, so you can keep track of me making a fool of myself, getting rejected, and maybe, just maybe, getting some huge wins!

charity: water has some of the most touching, tragic, and triumphant stories I’ve ever heard. I can’t do them justice on my own, so I’ll let them tell them.

Scott Harrison, the founder of charity: water’s story changed my life. I know it’s long, but I think it might do the same for you.
